Ian Locke is an award-winning playwright, director, and performer hailing from Corner Brook, Newfoundland, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts (Theatre - Performance) from Grenfell Campus, Memorial University and completed the Broadway Teachers Workshop (New York City) virtually in 2020, taking part in multiple workshops with industry professionals. On the island, Ian has worked with numerous companies, including Gros Morne Summer Music, Opera on the Avalon, Off-Broadway Players, Stage West Theatre Festival, Theatre Newfoundland-Labrador, Hard Ticket Theatre, & Wintertide Chamber Music Festival. Selected highlights include Phantom of the Opera (OotA), Blood Brothers, RENT (OBP), The Anger in Ernest & Ernestine (Stage West), & The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber & Jody Richardson’s King of Broadway (GMSM).
As a playwright, Locke has created many memorable experiences for audiences to enjoy, having written numerous productions taking place on and around the historic Newfie Bullet. In 2017, his original play Postcards from the Train received the Achievement of Community Excellence Award for Best Historic Project; also in 2017, Locke was awarded the opportunity to create an original play for the McIvers Come Home Year celebration. While still in high school, Locke was selected as a member of the Youth Theatre Island Exchange Project, touring With Cruel Times In Between to Tasmania, Australia during the 10 Days on the Island Festival. He can also be seen in short films Emile’s Legacy, High Alert (CNA Productions) & Crossroads (CRK Films). Locke is a community television regular, producing and hosting his own show - The Stage Door on Rogers Corner Brook, highlighting the cultural goings-on in our beautiful region. Locke has also produced and curated a number of musical theatre revue performances at the Rotary Arts Centre in Corner Brook.
Ian Locke has been a proud faculty member for Graham Academy since its roots in 2016, and it has been a highlight to work to grow with this company to become GMSM’s first Artistic Associate. Ian’s teaching helps to encourage performers to find their sparkle, and grow to show what makes them unique in performance. Locke has also created numerous workshops for youth at Regional & Provincial High School Drama Festivals, the National Boychoir of Canada retreat, and the Provincial Drama Society’s Drama Festival in Corner Brook, covering areas such as improvisation, scene study, and creating dynamic physical characters.
